How to Calculate Your Zakat

Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam: a yearly act of giving that purifies your wealth and supports those in need. Calculating it is simpler than it looks once you know the few rules.

What Zakat is

Zakat is an obligatory charity of 2.5% on qualifying wealth held for a full lunar year (a hawl). It is not a tax but an act of worship — and a redistribution that strengthens the community.

The nisab threshold

You only owe Zakat if your eligible wealth stays above the nisab — the minimum, based on the value of about 85 g of gold or 595 g of silver. Check the current local value, as it moves with metal prices.

What wealth counts

Cash, bank savings, gold, silver, business stock and investments are zakatable. Your home, car and personal items are not. You can deduct debts that are due, then apply 2.5% to what remains above the nisab.

Doing the calculation

Add up your zakatable wealth, subtract eligible debts, and if the total is above the nisab, multiply by 2.5%. Our calculator does the last step instantly — just enter your eligible wealth.
